Lady Gaga: The Dictator of Pop
Lady Gaga is known for her outrage outfits, over the top style, timeless songs, original and brave music videos, and her following that is incomparable to any other public figure in recent times. Her three studio albums, ‘The Fame’, ‘The Fame Monster’ and the classic ‘Born This Way’ have sold millions of copies worldwide and propelled her to the place she is now, ‘The Dictator of Pop.
The media has become obsessed with naming female singers ‘The Queen of Pop’, we have seen Britney, Katy, Kylie and Madonna, and now many are quick to declare Lady Gaga the ‘Queen’. But I believe that Lady Gaga is much more than a Queen and should definitely not be degraded in a category with the likes of Britney, Kylie, Katy and Madonna.Don’t get me wrong these female pop stars have had outstanding careers with countless hits but none compare to the level of success and influence LG has had in such a short time frame. Since Lady Gaga emerged on the scene we have seen more outrageous outfits and hair colours and over the top music videos then ever, this is because of Lady Gaga’s influence. When Katy Perry first emerged, she was a raven haired, blue eyed beauty with simple outfits and quite stereotypical music videos. Though after LG’s influence Katy Perry is now a purple haired pop star with overblown outfits and music videos to match, need i say where this influence has come from, (Obviously Lady G herself). Another famous female pop star is Nicki Minaj, who has only emerged onto the scene recently but has been seen with green, and pink hair colours, completely excessive outfits and again music videos to match. But before Nicki was noticed worldwide, she was a black haired rapper, who wrote about stereotypical issues and blended in with the rest of her competition.
But what is so admirable about Lady Gaga isn’t that fellow singers are attempting to replicate her, is that she has been able to keep in front of the pack and is constantly reinventing herself, musically and stylistically. Her songs are of meaning as is her fashion sense which all have underlying themes and concepts unlike the wacky attempts of Nicki Minaj, whose outfits have no meaning or depth. Madonna is also a name that is constantly being put in the same sentence as Lady Gaga, and although Madonna once had illustrious career, she has only become a stereotypical mess who attempts to be outrageous but really just looks like a skinny old woman who shouldn’t be wearing a leotard. So often Madonna herself and the media have implied or blatantly declared that Lady Gaga is influenced or a ‘wannabe’ Madonna. This has no credit. The only similarity is that Lady Gaga is a pioneer in her industry as Madonna once WAS, and that Lady Gaga has referenced the eighties era a lot in her portfolio. Other than that, there is no similarities. Lady Gaga’s music has depth and meanings and can relate to anyone at any point in their life and has influenced people of all cultures all over the world, I believe it is safe to say her influence and messages are on a level with the late Michael Jackson. Her BTW album was fresh, new and inspiring and its foreign nature may have startled many but its success is still unprecedented and it will be no surprise that many other female artists next albums will follow her lead and share similar messages of individuality and love for oneself. So its is lucky that Gaga is working on her next album which is just another example of her staying one step in front of the rest. Now, i know it is frustrating watching countless female singers of today replicate Lady Gaga, but these girls are really only paying homage to the mother monster herself, because in twenty years when we look back at what defined this generation only one name will release from our lips and that is ‘Lady Gaga: The Dictator of Pop’.
